De Jong is set to make a return to the Eredivisie this summer with PSV Eindhoven leading the race for his signature.

Should he make the move it will bring about an end to a disappointing time at St James' Park, with a series of injuries having seriously limited his chances since he arrived.

With the Magpies strengthening this summer, he has found himself further down the pecking order at the club.

And he says the fact that Rafa Benitez could not guarantee first-team football is the reason behind him deciding to depart.

“I hope to get started at PSV,” he told the Chronicle.

“Their ambitions talk to me and they play Champions League. And it would mean that I'm going to play together with my brother. That’s a dream Luuk and I have had for some time.

“Coach Rafael Benitez has said he sees a future for me at the club but feels that I need matches at a level to judge me. And he can’t guarantee me games in the Championship he said.”

It now remains to be seen whether De Jong does depart and manages to get his career back on track in Holland.

There is no denying that the last few years have been disastrous for him and he has a lot of work ahead of him to turn things around.
