Warning To Everton Fans ... Take Your Coat!

The guy supposedly lived in Kiev and said the country was enjoying "an Indian summer".

So, the Toon Army set off wearing nothing more than Toon shirts and jeans ... and what a mistake THAT was!

When we arrived the Russians (as some liked to be called), said we were in for a cold night, and boy were they right.

A lovely autumn day, but come 4pm the temperature dropped to Baltic! Brass monkey weather indeed, and as one Geordie fan said: "me balls have just disappeared up me arse!"

Many wore bin-liners and bought bear-skin hats to fight off the cold.

Everton play in the Ukraine tonight (Thursday) and our warning goes out to their fans. DON'T BE FOOLED LIKE WE WERE!

John Beresford was Newcastle's European hero again as Kenny Dalglish's men fought back to earn a precious Champions' League point in Kiev tonight.

Newcastle trailed 2-0 at half-time and were outplayed for long periods of the Group C tie against Ukrainian champions Dinamo Kiev.

But Beresford pulled a goal back in the 77th minute to rekindle Newcastle hopes and, six minutes from time, he had a big hand in the Magpies' equaliser.

Beresford let fly from 30 yards and his shot took a wicked deflection off Olexandr Golovoko that completely wrongfooted keeper Olexandr Shovkovsky.

Dalglish's injury hit side had found Dinamo too hot to handle for most of a match played out in near freezing conditions.

Watched by a boisterous crowd of close on 100,000, the home side struck within four minutes through their Ukranian footballer of the year Serguei Rebrov.

Newcastle suffered another blow in the 25th minute when Faustino Asprilla, their hat-trick hero in 3-2 defeat of Barcelona at St James's Park, limped off with a knee injury.

And three minutes later Dinamo scored what seemed to be a decisive second, Andriy Shevchenko coolly steering a low shot wide of the advancing Shay Given.

Both goals were created by influential former Belarusian footballer of the year Valentin Belkevitch.

Newcastle went into the tie without Alessandro Pistone, who failed to recover from a foot injury.

Stuart Pearce and skipper Rob Lee were given until the final hours before the kick off before decisions were made on their fitness. Lee played but Pearce missed out, still suffering from a hamstring strain.

The home fans were in boisterous mood, 65,000 tickets having been sold 24 hours before the kick off.

The home side caused problems from the start with their pace and ability to go past the United defenders down either flank proving decisive. And within four minutes disaster struck as Rebrov flashed a close range effort into the United net.

The brilliant Belkevitch turned Steve Watson inside out before crossing into the six yard box. Given looked rooted to the spot as Rebrov fired home from six yards.

Asprilla was not put off by the close marking of Yuri Dmitrulin and looked lively as United hit back with some purpose and he should have equalised when finding himself free 15 yards out.

He moved the ball on to his right foot but his final effort flew disappointingly straight at Shovkovsky.

Asprilla departed after catching his studs in the turf taking a freekick and then Shevchenko made it 2-0 with a deadly finish.

United's defence had lost the ball 30 yards out and Belkevitch picked it up and fed player of the year Shevchenko who beat Given low to his right from 10 yards.

Belarus midfielder Belkevitch was the game's outstanding individual during the opening 45 minutes played out in a minus four temperature. He was popping up everywhere to give United a major headache.

Lee failed to reappear after the half time interval with Georgian midfielder Temuri Ketsbaia replacing him.

Dalglish's men lacked nothing in spirit as Ketsbaia pushed them forward but moves broke down with United lacking a cutting edge up front.

Given flung himself to his left to palm away Veshtchuk's drive and keep Newcastle in the game.

Beresford gave the Magpies hope when he fired home his fourth goal of the season 12 minutes from time after Watson's long throw had been flicked on by John Barnes.

And Newcastle's left back, who scored twice against Croatia Zagreb in the preliminary round, then salvaged a point with his speculative late strike which looped off Golovko's outstretched boot and crept inside Shovkovsky's right-hand post with the keeper having dived to his left.
