Chris Waddle: "I don't know where Alan Shearer goes from here, I've got to say. He's tried every system you can think of.

"Now he may be better off with no strikers and packing the midfield as it was a shambles (against Liverpool). It could have been seven or eight, they have hit the bar three times.

"Let's be honest, Newcastle had one chance, one attempt at goal.

"Joey Barton has been quiet all game, he's got on with his job, tried to pass and compete and, all of a sudden, things are not going their way and he does that. He should not have been questioning it.

"But that was an excellent post-match interview from Shearer. How honest can you be?

"He said they should have lost by four or five and said everything we were talking about.

"His honesty was refreshing. Now there's two home games, and he's always said they have to win them.

"He has got to get them fired up and get his tactics right next week against Middlesbrough.

"Shearer could have said the offside cost them the first goal and this happened and that happened. They were blocked off for the second goal etc.

"People do but he was so honest, regardless if the first goal was offside, it didn't make any difference to the game.

"I think Alan can put a side out and look at Danny Guthrie as he's young and fit. Kevin Nolan has not played a lot and is 27 or 28, he's fit. They're the players he's got to look at. Nicky Butt has had a hard season and been on his own in midfield and Alan Smith has been out.

"He's got to install Michael Owen and could play Andy Carroll, who is a young boy with energy and passion. There's a lot to think about. He's got experienced players but they haven't done it for him.

"I was at Middlesbrough yesterday and they have a lot of energy and lot of pace.

"When you play football if you haven't got any confidence or belief in yourself you may as well turn around and go back down the tunnel.

"If you fail, you fail. If you're subbed, you're subbed. Once you cross that white line, remember what you are good at and try to do it. There's nothing to lose.

"It is the last chance saloon."
