Villa Distance Themselves From Owen!

A report had claimed Villa were ready to offer the out-of-contract Newcastle forward, 29, a two-year contract worth £55,000 a week with the option for a further year should Owen remain free of injury.

But a statement on the club's website read: "Martin O'Neill has dismissed stories suggesting Villa have offered Michael Owen a two-year contract."

The striker would not entertain a pay-as-you-play deal and would also demand a significant signing-on fee.

But it is understood no formal talks have taken place between Owen's representatives and the club.
