There has been mounting speculation in the Italian press that Hugo hasn’t settled well in Newcastle and would move to Juventus in January, with either Mario Zalayeta or Edgar Davids going the other way.

But in the wake of the Feyenoord victory he has pledged his future to United

"Obviously I have not been happy when I have been out of the side," said the Portuguese international.

"Now I have finally been given a proper chance, I am happy and I want to stay at the club.

"Playing in the later stages of the Champions League was a dream of mine and now I have achieved it I am delighted.

"It was always an objective to play against the best in Europe and I want to stay at Newcastle to make sure that happens," continued the £8.5million midfielder.

"Obviously I did not want to come here and stay on the bench.

"That's why I said I had reasons for being unhappy.

"But now we are set to take on the best in the second round of the Champions League, I want to stay and play my part."
