Venables and Shepherd tell contrasting tales

Leeds manager Terry Venables claims that he has spoken with Peter Ridsdale on Monday and the chairman was not aware of a bid for the England defender.

The former Barcelona manager was asked about Newcastle expressing an interest in the player and commented: "Well they shouldn’t have done that if they aren’t going to make a bid."

But presenter Ian Payne claimed to have spoken to Freddy Shepherd, who told him that a verbal bid for the player had been made on Friday and that he couldn’t understand why Leeds were claiming that no bid had been received.

All of which does nothing to clear up the situation.
