Lovenkrands became the first person to score past him in more than 21 hours.

Van der Sar flapped at the simplest of efforts after just nine minutes to allow Lovenkrands a tap-in and have the Toon fans raise the roof at St James' Park.

Sir Alex Ferguson: "Edwin van der Sar himself said he made a mess of it.

"He would rather not have (seen his sequence broken) in such an important game away from home but it was going to happen some time."

Peter Lovenkrands: "I'm not bothered about the goal, to be honest.

"I was just disappointed we didn't take anything from the game.

"In fact, we're disappointed we didn't go on to win the game.

"We've given ourselves a great chance and not gone on to take it.

"Of course it's always nice to score. Personally, it was a boost. But the goal didn't really matter in the end. I would have rather taken something from the game.

"It doesn't mean much when you lose a game."
