It was sold at St James' Park stadium, with the proceeds from the sale donated to the Bobby Robson Foundation.

Fred Wyrley-Birch of Anderson and Garland, which facilitated the sale, commented: "It's been a privilege to manage this extremely poignant auction for the Sir Bobby Robson Foundation and to have been able to see John's amazing NUFC collection up close.

"It's truly incredible en masse. John was a fervent supporter of the football club and it's lovely to know his treasured things have gone to homes and venues where they will be equally well cared for, having raised a fantastic total for a brilliant charity, local to where John lived."

Lady Elsie Robson, widow of Sir Bobby, said: "We're very proud that John's family donated his marvellous collection to the Sir Bobby Robson Foundation…

"I know today was bitter sweet for John's family. We're very grateful to them and to everyone who has contributed to making this auction such a success."
