The 35-year-old scored his 201st goal for the club and while he was taking part in a BBC Radio Newcastle phone-in on Thursday evening, Laura Milburn was the first caller.

Laura Milburn: "I would like to congratulate Alan. I think the expression on your face after you scored that goal was absolutely magic. I'd just like to wish you all the best in the next round (of the FA Cup). I hope they get to Wembley and I hope they carry on and bring the cup home. That would be super."

Alan Shearer: "It's very kind of you to say so. I was speaking to your son Jack and he said to me if his Dad wanted someone to break the record, it would have been a Geordie, so I'm delighted and honoured to have gone past him because I know what he meant and means to the people up here."

Jack appeared on BBC's Look North earlier in the week to say he was pleased the record went to a Geordie.
