Top FOUR The Aim ... Not Top Six!

I'm sorry but, like Alan Shearer two years ago when he said "qualifying for the UEFA Cup is NOT success", I think we have to split the top four ... and I'm sure new owner Mike Ashley will see it that way too.

Graeme Souness and Glenn Roeder both set a target of the top six, and that infuriated Shearer, who finally left the club without a medal to show for it.

Steve Harper: "The top six is what we are looking for. This year for the first time in a long time, we have got competition and strength in depth in every position, and that can only be good for everybody.

"It's been a big summer on the pitch, off the pitch, upstairs - the whole club is having an overhaul.

"It's not going to happen overnight. There are a lot of new faces in, a lot of people out at the end of last year and the club is changing from top to bottom.

"It's going to take time, but it has been an encouraging start."
