Sam Allardyce paid tribute to Emre for the way the little Turkish international performed in his first Premier League start of the season.

Emre and Nicky Butt controlled the midfield and battered former United man Jermaine Jenas and Spurs hardman Didier Zokora into submission in last night's 3-1 victory over the North London side, which could result in Martin Jol losing his job.

Big Sam: "Emre has been getting better and better.

"We do worry about international games, but the two games for Turkey were a great thing for him and one of the reasons I selected him from the off against Spurs.

"When he went on against Everton he looked really sharp and he made the biggest contribution in terms of us winning the game.

"He came back disappointed with Turkey's results, but I still thought I would put him straight into the team so he could give us from the start what he gave us against Everton.

"He did tire a bit towards the end against Spurs, but that was to be expected because it is so long since he has had a Premier League start.

"Now I hope's Emre has got the bit between his teeth because he has got terrific passing ability - and if he produces the work-rate to go with it then he's a terrific player.

"The balls Emre put in for Michael Owen against Everton and then for Cacapa against Spurs were spot-on.

"Emre wasn't on corners initially, but with Charles N'Zogbia coming off at half-time he took over.

"And he remembered where we wanted him to hit, which was exactly just where we thought Spurs would leave gaps."
