Newcastle United Academy director Joe Joyce: "It is great for Andy to get his first cap and his first goal.

"I was delighted he chose to represent England and it is great recognition for him. It is also great recognition for the Academy.

"Andy was outstanding last year, especially in our FA Youth Cup run. After that he went on to play for the first team and this is the next stage for him.

"Knowing Andy, he will take this in his stride. e is a laid-back lad and he will not let it affect him too much.

"He is also hungry to learn and I know he will want to impress."

Carroll joined Preston on loan in the summer, and after the Deepdale club came close to promotion last term, they have suffered a horror start to the new campaign.

They are second bottom with one point, and Carroll was again substituted when they lost 2-1 at Coventry last week.

Preston chief Paul Simpson has labelled reports of a rift in the Deepdale camp as "garbage" and says there is a "good spirit" in the squad.

North End have made a poor start to their Championship campaign and there have been reports of certain players being unsettled.

According to some rumours, there was a dispute between Simpson, former skipper Graham Alexander and vice-captain Paul McKenna over tactics and training methods.

But Simpson maintains there has never been any divide between any of the senior figures at Deepdale.

"I've never heard so much garbage in my life," Simpson told the Lancashire Evening Post. "I'm sorry to spoil people's fun. But there is a really good spirit between everyone here, the staff and the players.

"Contrary to what people might have been saying, there is not a split in the camp. It's as simple as that.

"I don't know where these stories come from other than someone has gone on a message board telling lies.

"It is people who just want to try to cause trouble."
