Nigel de Jong made the tackle which left Hatem Ben Arfa with a double leg fracture.

But Newcastle are walking on dodgy ground having also called on referees' chiefs to investigate the performance of the officials in the game for a couple of controversial penalty decisions.

NUFC statement: "Newcastle United have today written a strongly worded letter to the Football Association in relation to the tackle by Manchester City's Nigel de Jong on Hatem Ben Arfa in Sunday's Premier League fixture, which resulted in Ben Arfa sustaining a broken tibia and fibula of his left leg.

"The club has asked the FA for the appropriate action to be taken against De Jong for the tackle which, in the club's, opinion was unnecessary and used excessive force."

"Newcastle United will also be writing to the appropriate body regarding the performance of the match officials, specifically the referee, in relation to a number of incidents during the game, including the tackle on Ben Arfa."

Chris Hughton: “I am absolutely devastated for Hatem.

“To be injured at any time is bad enough, but to suffer such a horrendous injury as a double leg break is sickening for the lad.

“After playing only a handful of games for us, scoring a cracking goal at Everton and doing fantastically well, it is a cruel and devastating blow for Hatem, and for the club as a whole.

“On the plus side I am delighted to hear from the hospital that the operation was successful and now it is just a case of nursing him back to fitness.

“Hatem is a smashing lad with great character and bags of determination and, with the help of our medical team and backroom staff, I am sure he will make a full and speedy recovery.”
