We recall how the two clubs have fared against each other on the relatively rare times they have met across the decades.
First meeting:
St James’ Park, FA Cup fourth round, January 31, 1953. The Millers claimed a major scalp, beating the famous 1952 cup holders in front of 54,356 at Gallowgate.
A strong United team featuring Bobby Mitchell, Frank Brennan and George Robledo went down 3-1 to the second division outfit.
Last meeting:
St James’ Park, FA Cup fourth round replay, February 3, 1993. A crowd of 29,005 saw Kevin Keegan’s burgeoning ‘Entertainers’ beat Rotherham 2-0, after the Toon were held to a 1-1 draw at Millmoor. David Kelly and Lee Clark were on target for the Magpies.

For starters - Imre Varadi, Leon Best, James Tavernier, Haris Vukic, Jim Crawford, Tony Cunningham, Pat Heard and Keith Kettleborough (who, incidentally, was called into the England training squad by Alf Ramsey in the run up to the 1966 World Cup finals).
Biggest United win:
Kevin Keegan famously scored four in a 5-1 second division romp at Millmoor in October, 1982. Six months later, Keegan, Terry McDermott, Kenny Wharton and Imre Varadi gave United a 4-0 win at Gallowgate.
Biggest United loss:
Aside from that 3-1 FA Cup defeat in 1953, Rotherham would win by the same scoreline in a second division match in South Yorkshire in April 1963. John McGrath notched the Toon’s consolation goal.

History is on United’s side. In just 15 meetings in all competitions, Newcastle have won eight, to Rotherham’s two. Five games have been drawn.
