Blackburn lifted themselves out of the Premier League relegation zone with a 3-0 victory over Newcastle at Ewood Park.

Two goals in the space of five second-half minutes from Benni McCarthy and Jason Roberts lit up what was otherwise a poor game.

Roberts added the third four minutes from time, just after Nicky Butt had been sent off for a second bookable offence after clattering into David Dunn.

With Middlesbrough hammered at West Brom and Tottenham not playing until Sunday it meant Rovers moved up to 16th place, out of the bottom three on goal difference.

If ever a match was more about the result than the performance it was this one.

The first 25 minutes of a disappointing game passed without major incident as neither side was able to enjoy a decent spell of possession or pressure.

Newcastle striker Andy Carroll nodded Damien Duff's sixth-minute cross tamely wide, Keith Andrews cleared off the line from Carroll's looping header at a 13th-minute corner and Michael Owen bobbled a shot across Robinson's goal.

When Blackburn got the ball their delivery was poor, with Tugay and Brett Emerton both guilty of wasting possession.

Morten Gamst Pedersen had one decent break from the centre of midfield but when it came to picking out the run of McCarthy he failed miserably.

The ball spent more time in the air than at players' feet and right-back Andre Ooijer and Tugay both blazed long-range shots well over as a lack of inspiration led to desperation.

What the watching England coach Fabio Capello and Republic of Ireland boss Giovanni Trapattoni made of it is anyone's guess.

Things picked up slightly when Chris Samba's 36th-minute header from Pedersen's inswinging corner bouncing a couple of feet past Shay Given's right-hand post.

However, at the other end Butt should have at least hit the target from eight yards having been played in by Duff on the right but he poked his shot wide, and Carroll also hooked well over from a corner.

Late on in the half Blackburn lost Samba to an eye injury after Carroll accidentally caught him with an elbow, meaning a reshuffle with midfielder Dunn coming on.

Emerton slotted in at right-back and Ooijer moved into the centre of defence.

Five minutes into the second half Duff put Owen through but when he crossed to the far post Charles N'Zogbia fired high over the crossbar.

N'Zogbia then fouled Andrews on the edge of the Newcastle penalty area but McCarthy's driven shot around the wall was superbly tipped on to the left-hand post by the diving Given.

Tugay was replaced by Vince Grella in the 59th minute as Allardyce sought to inject more drive into the midfield and within two minutes Rovers were ahead.

Emerton's hanging right-wing cross was destined for McCarthy at the far post until Jose Enrique sent the striker tumbling to the floor.

Referee Rob Styles pointed to the spot and the South Africa international picked himself up to fire past Given.

It was his fourth goal in as many matches having been restored to the starting line-up when Allardyce replaced the sacked Paul Ince in mid-December.

Rovers were immediately lifted and Roberts made it 2-0 five minutes later when Robinson's long punt downfield was helped on by Pedersen.

McCarthy immediately departed to a standing ovation as Allardyce sent on Santa Cruz.

The Blackburn fans seemed to be in two minds how to react. The Paraguayan's arrival was greeted by a chorus of boos but less than a minute later they were chanting his name.

Newcastle's frustrations boiled over in the 83rd minute when Butt clattered into Dunn and was sent off for a second yellow card, having been booked 10 minutes earlier.

The former England midfielder reacted by blasting the ball into the crowd before taking a slow walk off the pitch and down the tunnel.

Roberts added the third four minutes from time when he stabbed home Pedersen's cross from close range.

Alan Shearer called it: "The best game I have ever seen", but for 45 minutes we thought the wheels had come off and a two ton truck was about to squash us into oblivion. There many things I found unbelieveable bout this day.

There was the obvious - 3-0 down after ten minutes; but I was amazed how the 50,000 Toon fans kept their composure while I was ranting and raving like a maniac.

I felt the stadium would get very very ugly if we went 2-0 down, what with the transfer dealing earlier in the week ... but even at 4-0 down it didn't happen.

Yeah there were idiots like me losing their rag ... but ythankfully ... not that many.

Evertone was disappointed (to say the least) but the pure hatred I expected was kept under control. The question was - who to blame - Ashley or Carroll?

But Toon fans are not idiots and we all know either party could have blocked the transfer IF they wanted. Ashley could have said "no" to Liverpool and Carroll (having just signed a five year contract) could have said "no" to Ashley.

The fact is ... they are BOTH greedy tossers ... so why worry about it?

Coming back from 4-0 down against a team like Arsenal was something we will never ever forget.

I was at St James' Park when we bounced back from 4-1 down to beat Leicester City when they had Mike Hooper in goal, and I was at Loftus Road when we were 4-0 up at half-time and were lucky to get away with 5-5 against QPR. But this was remarkable, because of who Arsenal are!

I asked my mate (Dennis Taylor) who he thought was Man Of The Match and he replied: "In the second half - the WHOLE team!"

How can I argue?

Footymad Match Report:

Cheik Tiote's first goal in English football secured a remarkable point for Newcastle as they fought back from 4-0 down against 10-man Arsenal.

The Ivory Coast international pegged back the Gunners with a stunning 87th-minute volley after Joey Barton had scored twice from the penalty spot either side of Leon Best's fourth goal of the season.

Alan Pardew's men were in complete disarray as the Gunners raced into a 4-0 lead at St James' Park within the opening 26 minutes.

Goals from Theo Walcott, Johan Djourou and a Robin van Persie double looked to have wrapped up the points and allowed Arsenal to keep the pressure on Barclays Premier League leaders Manchester United.

But after midfielder Abou Diaby had been sent off for furiously pushing Barton to the ground after a no-holds-barred 48th-minute challenge, Newcastle, roared on by a crowd of 51,561, pulled off the most unlikely of recoveries.

Life for Newcastle without Andy Carroll had got off to a bad start at Fulham on Wednesday evening, and the mood inside St James' was decidedly ugly by the time 10 chaotic minutes had elapsed.

Arsenal were breathtaking as their pace and movement left the men in black and white at times bewildered.

However, they met little resistance as a Newcastle side which had won 1-0 at the Emirates Stadium in November showed few signs of producing a similarly dogged display on their own pitch, even with combative midfielder Tiote restored to the side after his three-match ban.

The worry before kick-off had been that, without Carroll, now at Liverpool, and the injured Shola Ameobi, the ball would not stick in the final third of the field and that would invite pressure on to Newcastle's back four.

In the event, neither Carroll nor Ameobi would have made a significant difference as their side saw too little of the ball to worry the Gunners.

They did not see it at all in amid a red and white blizzard as Arsenal had the game under control before they had broken sweat.

Walcott had scored twice in a 4-0 Carling Cup victory on Tyneside in October, and he needed only 42 seconds to increase his tally as he ran on to Andrey Arshavin's pass and slid the ball past Steve Harper with Fabricio Coloccini and Mike Williamson trailing in his wake.

There were less than three minutes on the clock when Djourou was inexplicably allowed to meet an Arshavin free-kick seven yards out, and his header flew in off the underside of the crossbar.

When Van Persie fired home a third goal from Walcott's cross in the 10th minute, a packed house settled down for what looked certain to be an agonising remaining 80 minutes.

The first chorus of disapproval aimed at owner Mike Ashley rang around St James' Park as the game restarted.

Wenger's men were simply irresistible, with Cesc Fabregas and Diaby dominating in the middle of the pitch to allow Arshavin, Walcott and Jack Wilshere to repeatedly run at the shell-shocked Newcastle defence.

Arsenal increased their lead with 26 minutes gone when Van Persie headed Bacary Sagna's cross home, and it came as a surprise that the scoreline remained at 4-0 when the half-time whistle handed the Magpies brief respite.

Van Persie might have done better after running on to Williamson's weak header and shooting wide, and Harper managed to turn the Dutchman's shot against the post in injury-time.

But the cracks started to appear after Diaby over-reacted to Barton's rugged challenge and pushed him to the ground to earn an inevitable red card.

Newcastle took the Frenchman's untimely departure as their cue to step up a gear, and they got their reward after 68 minutes when, after Koscielny had brought down Best inside the box, Barton converted from the penalty spot to at least give the more optimistic members of the Toon Army some hope.

Alarm bells started ringing for the Gunners when Best struck from close range with 15 minutes remaining, and when Barton drilled home a second penalty with seven minutes to play, a point was there for the taking.

Tiote saved the best for last when he lashed an 87th-minute left-footed volley into the bottom left corner to complete a remarkable repair job.

Kevin Nolan might even have won the game for Newcastle in injury-time, but that was a little too much to ask.

THE FUNNIEST GEORDIE BOOK OF THE DECADE .......

£7.99 (that includes post and packing) AND WE DONATE £1 PER COPY TO THE SIR BOBBY ROBSON CANCER FOUNDATION

AYA

The hilarious history of entertaining on the North-East of England Workingmen's club circuit.

The first rung on the ladder of dreams and aspirations, and it sure as hell isn’t Vegas or Madison Square Garden.

If you have never visited a Newcastle Workingmen’s club before, I’m sure the 170-plus pages in this book will be bloody confusing ... and have you in fits of laughter!

It features Sir Bobby Robson, Chubby Brown, and host of Geordie 'legends' just waiting to be discovered.

The Echo: "5 stars - absolute genius! I could not put this book down. The sort of Geordie humour the Toon is built on!"
