Toon To Sign 'Crocked' Defender?

Newcastle hope to sign Edmilson even though he is currently sidelined after knee surgery. Edmilson is likely to be out of action for between four and six months!

Toon boss Sam Allardyce has flown to Barcelona to try to push through a move for World Cup winner Edmilson.

The 30-year-old Brazilian spoke to Allardyce on Thursday night and they will resume talks on Friday.

The defender can also play in the midfield holding role, the position Joey Barton is expected to fill.

Edmilson is still a world-class player, but do Barca know something we don't? The very fact Barca president Joan Laporte was keen to give Newcastle permission to talk to the player asks the question.

He has a year left on his existing contract, but Allardyce is confident he can land him for a nominal fee.

Sam is also in the hunt for his Barcelona team-mate Eidur Gudjohnsen. The striker's situation is looking worse with Thierry's Henry's arrival from Arsenal. The ex-Chelsea player is only a squad player at the Nou Camp to start with, so Henry's position is sure to see him drop down the pecking order.

The Iceland international, who has also been linked with derby rivals Sunderland and Manchester United this summer, worked briefly under Allardyce at Bolton.
This obviously has many thinking there could be truth in rumours Michael Owen and Obafemi Martins are ready to use their get-out clauses in their contracts.
