The Serbian forward has been a big hit at St James Park since arriving from Anderlecht last summer.

Despite managing just nine goals all season he became a firm fan favourite because of his all-action displays.

It has been suggested he could thrive in the Championship this year, with the idea being his physical nature is perfectly suited to the division.

He faces a fierce fight to get into the first team, though, with Rafa Benitez currently blessed in the striker department after a busy summer. One of those competitors is Dwight Gayle, who has lavished praise on his fellow forward.

“He’s a great striker, a great hold-up player. Me and him could work really well together,” he told the Chronicle.

“My runs off of his flick-ons would work well. But we’ve got some great different strikers here, and all different combinations would work well.”

It would certainly not be surprising to see Benitez look to go with two up front at stages this season and try to exploit this potential partnership.

Given the start they have had playing just one striker, though, it seems unlikely he will change anytime soon.
