Toon Striker Starts Comeback

Rafa Benitez watched Daryl Murphy make a goalscoring comeback for Newcastle United.

The striker scored for the Under-23s in this afternoon's 1-1 draw against West Bromwich Albion.

The 33-year-old suffered injury after making his first-team debut for the club in September's 2-0 EFL Cup win over Wolverhampton Wanderers.

United manager Benitez watched Murphy played 45 minutes in the Premier League 2 fixture against West Brom.Achraf Lazaar and Massadio Haidara also featured for Peter Beardsley's side at Whitley Park.

Murphy – who had a previous spell in the North East with Sunderland – headed a Lazaar cross home in the 41st minute before being withdrawn at the break.

West Brom levelled seven minutes from time through a Jack Fitzwater penalty.Callum Williams had conceded the spot kick with a foul.
