Adam Armstrong has again caught the eye of Newcastle United boss Rafa Benitez - by winning the goal of the month award for September in the Sky Championship.

The Geordie youngster has proved to be a hit at Oakwell since arriving on a half-season loan deal with the Tykes.

And his superb strike for Barnsley against Preston North End is another reminder of just how much of a talent the Magpies have on their hands.

Armstrong said: “I’m delighted to win the award. It happened on my debut as well which makes it even more special and it’s definitely up there with one of my best goals.

“Conor Hourihane picked the ball up and I just thought I’ve got to make a run because we’re on the front foot and looking to grab the winner.

“I managed to chase it down, turn the defender and put it in. I really enjoyed celebrating that one right in front of our travelling fans.

“I’m loving it here at Barnsley. Coming in on loan and adapting to a new environment has been massive for my development.

“All of the lads are great, we’ve had a strong start to the season and it’s a really positive place to be at the moment.

“We’ll keep working hard every day to keep the wins coming and I feel we can go a long way this season.

“To win the award represents a big moment in my career so far - so thanks to all the fans who voted for my goal. It means a lot and hopefully it’s one of many more to come this season!”

And EFL goal of the month judge Don Goodman added: “It was a goal borne from the confidence he’s taken from his superb goal-scoring loan spell at Coventry City, where he showed what an instinctive finisher he is.

“Alex Baptiste is no slouch, but the pace that Armstrong showed was really impressive. The skill involved is out of this world and had it been Messi or Ronaldo, this goal would be global already.

“If he continues in this vein, it won’t be long before Rafa Benitez demands his return to Newcastle.’”
