Newcastle United kick-started their Championship campaign by thumping Reading 4-1 at St James's Park on Wednesday night.

Midfielder Isaac Hayden got the scoring underway on 20 minutes, but that goal - his first since joining the Magpies from Arsenal this summer - only scratches the surface of his performance against the Royals last night.

The 21-year-old's off-the-ball contribution seemed excellent as Hayden won possession back for his side on eight occasions - matching Matt Ritchie, Vurnon Anita and Jonjo Shelvey in that department.

But Hayden also won nine duels - more than any other Newcastle player - and won all five of the tackles he went in for.

In possession, he seemed quite sloppy and only completed 23 of his 37 passes, but 15 of them did go forward in a stat which might encapsulate Newcastle's urgency, having lost their first two Championship games of the season.

This was a one-sided game in scoreline only and it would be wrong to dismiss Hayden's contribution in the belief that his numbers say more about Reading on the night than him, which does not seem to be the case.

Like Newcastle, Reading boasted eight shots in total - only three were on target - but Jaap Stam's troops finished with 58% possession and nine corners compared to United's two.

It was a very decent overall display from Hayden - who has started all three of their games this season - and going forward it stands Newcastle in good stead to have figures like him in the side, it seems.
