Alan Smith: "Hopefully they will get behind us and we can give them something to cheer about against Arsenal.

"They are great supporters and they turn out every week.

"We would rather have 50,000 booing than nobody there at all.

"You could never perform at your best in an empty stadium. They deserve something.

"We had 6,000 at Blackburn, but we want to give them something to cheer about now.

"We've got the players. And hard work, commitment and work on the training field will sort this out.

"We have a lot of players who want to go forward. As a team we have to show we can go forward and come back.

"It will take time and we are still new together. We were doing well at the start of the season and we were hard to beat.

"Some people see my name on the team-sheet and, no matter what position I have played in, they think if you haven't scored you haven't done your job.

"I'm not here on a personal crusade - I am merely part of a team that wants to do well. I have played in a lot of positions for the good of the team and I will continue to do that.

"I think everybody knows we were disappointed after Portsmouth and Liverpool. It is hard for the fans to relate to how we feel because they think we aren't trying.

"That's when it becomes difficult as everyone is trying to do well. We know the response wasn't good enough.

"Everyone has to hold their hands up."
