Nile Ranger fired in a scorching volley from outside the box after 25 minutes to put his side in the lead with his second goal in two games.

United had enjoyed good chances before and after the opener and Mark Doninger's effort was chalked off for offside.

But Ryan Donaldson was taken off five minutes before the interval following a bad tackle by Andrew Pearson.

A long delay and Wigan then levelled the game up just before the break when Jonathan Routledge picked out Joe Holt who found a way through the defence before slotting past Harper.

Routledge then netted what turned out to the winner nine minutes into the second period.

NEWCASTLE UNITED: Harper, Morris, Folan, Edgar, Tozer, Doninger, Marwood, Godsmark, Sammy Ameobi (Newton 46), Donaldson (McCrudden 45), Ranger.
