Toon Pair Miss Out On Copa America

Good for Newcastle United in that the players will be fresh and ready for the new campaign ... but Mike Ashley could see it in a different light.

The Newcastle owner has made it known both players are available "at the right price", and having them as current Argentine internationals could double the asking price.

Neither player was included in Batista's provisional tournament squad of 26, but Coloccini is said to be attracting interest from the big clubs in Spain, and there was an outside chance he could be a dark horse.

Argentina will host the event and play in the tournament opener with Bolivia on Friday.

SQUAD:

Goalkeepers: Sergio Romero (AZ Alkmaar), Mariano Andujar (Catania), Juan Pablo Carrizo (River Plate)

Defenders: Javier Zanetti ( Inter Milan), Pablo Zabaleta (Manchester City), Nicolas Burdisso (AS Roma), Nicolas Pareja, Marcos Rojo (both Spartak Moscow), Gabriel Milito (Barcelona), Ezequiel Garay (Real Madrid)

Midfielders: Javier Mascherano (Barcelona), Esteban Cambiasso (Inter Milan), Lucas Biglia (Anderlecht), Ever Banega (Valencia), Fernando Gago, Angel Di Maria (both Real Madrid), Javier Pastore (Palermo)

Forwards: Lionel Messi (Barcelona), Gonzalo Higuain (Real Madrid), Carlos Tevez (Manchester City), Diego Milito (Inter Milan), Sergio Aguero (Atletico Madrid), Ezequiel Lavezzi (Napoli)

Meanwhile Fabricio Coloccini has reiterated his commitment to Newcastle.

The Argentinian defender, signed from Deportivo La Coruna in 2008, had been linked with a return to Spain with Sevilla.

But the 29-year-old, who still has two years on his contract, insists he has no intention of leaving St James' Park this summer.

"Now it is about the future at Newcastle and working towards next season," he said.

"Our first aim was to be safe last season and we achieved it. Next season we will look to move up the table again.

"We work well together as a team and I think that showed when it mattered last season.

"Hopefully we can get better results at home, win more matches than last year and climb up the table.

"I am happy at Newcastle and when I hear the fans singing my name it gives me a special feeling."

FOREWORD BY FAIRS CUP HERO JOHN McNAMEE

Sports Journalist Richie Everson: "At last a book that the fabulous Newcastle United fans can relate to. It's informative, all the facts and figures are there, plus the 120 match reports from all the fixtures ... but it is the articles by the supporters that amazed me.

"I went to many of those games, and this is the only book I can honestly say 'hits the nail on the head'!

"Yes we know the results and the scorers, but some of the facts in this book had me so wrapped up in it I couldn't put it down.

"Was Benny Arentoft cup-tied when he played in the final? Big Wyn and his battle with John McGrath; McFaul scoring a penalty when the crowd had gone home; the trouble in Palermo; it is all amazing stuff.

"I would honestly give this book 10 out of 10."
