Wayman scored 71 goals in 124 games for the Magpies, including 34 in 46 matches in the 1946-47 season. But that season he was dropped for the FA Cup semi-final against Charlton Athletic, a match United lost 4-0.

He moved onto Southampton, not because of the FA Cup snub, but because of the large number of players in the Toon dressing room.
Newcastle website www.TalkOfTheTyne.net spoke to him some time ago and he told them: "I couldn't find a peg for my clothes, so I decided to move on".  After Southampton he joined Preston, where he scored in every round as the Lancashire side reached the 1954 FA Cup final.
Wayman moved to Boro in 1954 and scored 33 times in 58 games to help the club stay in the Second Division.
