David Ginola (talking to the Chronicle): "I wasn't really surprised to see Newcastle turn to Alan. They have tried everything.

"They have been through so many different managers.

"The club is now in real trouble and they have asked a Geordie lad to help the club. It's no surprise.

"If you look at so many different managers, even though Alan doesn't have so much experience of the job, he has what others do not have.

"He's got the passion for the club and he has the motivation.

"It's a different kind of situation, playing in Europe or even mid-table doesn't have too much pressure.

"Playing in the relegation zone you have to be like a warrior. It is down to you to save the club and save the situation. And to be able to do that every game is a mission.

"To be leading that you have to have somebody who understands the club and the rules of the club.

"Newcastle is a very special club and it is difficult for people outside of Newcastle to understand it.

"To be honest to southerners, it is a different world altogether. There is passion here that is different to anywhere.

"It's a different attitude and that's what it's all about.

"Only the followers of the team will understand that but Alan understands it as well."
