The official reason was for "abusive behaviour".

Complaints were made on the midday East Coast Mainline train from King's Cross on Sunday as it approached York station.

The train was carrying a number of Newcastle United fans heading home after Saturday's away match with Fulham.

Two passengers made formal complaints about six travellers bound for Newcastle and two for Durham.

British Transport Police said it acted on complaints that the men were using foul and abusive language.

Although the eight were not arrested, they were forced to find an alternative way home.
