The programme was for the Aston Villa v Newcastle 1924 FA Cup Final.

Chris Willia, managing director of Buckinghamshire-based sporting memorabilia auctioneers Sportingold, said many collectors are always on the lookout for rare football programmes.

He said: "A lot of collectors try to collect all the cup final programmes from when Wembley first opened and the first final was in 1923.

"In 1924, the year of this programme, there was a special exhibition called British Empire Exhibition.

"For the cup final that year they produced a special programme with a colour cover that cost about four times as much as before.

"There was a lot of 'customer resistance' and not many were bought, which is why they are so rare.

"It may sound ridiculous, saying they're rare, then saying that we will have had three in a fairly short space of time. But often when people see that one sells for a lot of money they start to think about selling their own, especially in these times."
