Toon Defender Out With Tonsillitis

Newcastle boss Alan Pardew's selection problems show few signs of abating as he prepares to complete his stadium ban with the visit of Everton to St James' Park on Tuesday evening.

Midfielder Sammy Ameobi will be missing with an ankle problem and will join full-back Davide Santon on the sidelines as he continues his recovery from the bout of tonsillitis which prevented him from taking part in Saturday's 1-0 Barclays Premier League victory over Crystal Palace.

The Italian, however, could return for the weekend trip to Southampton, although both full-back Mathieu Debuchy (groin) and striker Loic Remy (calf) are likely to sit out both games.

Ameobi returned to training last week after recovering from a knee problem.

But the forward won’t be involved against Everton at St James’s Park tonight after picking up an ankle injury.

United manager Alan Pardew has also revealed defender Davide Santon isn’t yet ready to return from a bout of tonsillitis, despite training yesterday.

“Sammy’s hurt his ankle,” said Pardew. “He’s going to miss it.

“Davide trained, but he’s been very poorly, so we’re building him up for Southampton (on Saturday). I think he’ll be involved there, but not this one.”

Everton captain Phil Jagielka is now fully fit and manager Roberto Martinez will make a late decision on whether to include him against Newcastle on Tuesday.

The centre-back has missed four matches with a hamstring injury but Martinez may well choose to play him at struggling Fulham on Saturday instead.

Midfielder Steven Pienaar continues to be absent with a knee cartilage problem.
