Dan Gosling spent two weeks in June in sunny Orlando – where United will play Orlando City on Saturday – in a bid to regain the sharpness after enduring the best part of 15 months in rehab.

Gosling shattered his knee in what proved to be his last ever appearance for Everton at Wolves last year.

He signed for Newcastle on a free transfer after the Magpies exploited a loophole in his Everton contract.

Dan Gosling: “Having already been out to the United States this summer to do some work, I know the facilities here are first class.

“It was good for me to go to Orlando.

“It may sound like a holiday, but it was really hard work.

“I wanted to get some sharpness back and really knuckle down to make sure I was ready for the new season.

“Last year was a nightmare, and it makes me doubly determined to stamp my authority on the first team.

“We have got three big games over here and everybody will be out to make sure they are in the team for that opening game with Arsenal.

“I’ve always said that getting into the centre of midfield is my aim as it is my position. That will be what I’m trying to do this year.

“We have some good players who can also play there like Cheick Tiote and Joey Barton, so it will be tough.

“But that’s what pre-season is all about for me, and it is up to me to force the hand of the manager.

“It’s great that we have got them (new signings) on board.

“The manager is trying to play his own style and that includes plenty of action going forward.

“The arrival of the new players should be a big part of that, and I’m certainly looking forward to being part of it all.

“We’re here to get sharp and make sure we are fit and ready for the new season.

“Really, though, it is all about being ready for the Arsenal game.

“It is a huge game to start off with, but it’s one we are all looking forward to.

“There would be no better way to ignite our season than with a win in that game.”
