And I'm sure (if Besty reads NewcastleUtd-mad) he will take great pleasure in giving the NU-Mad editorial team a good kicking in the balls!

Kevin Nolan said a lot defending the ex-Coventry City striker prior to the game, suggesting "you only get match-fit if you play a lot of games, and with Andy Carroll the man of the moment, I feel for Besty being stuck on the sidelines".

The man himself said: "I want to impress, but it's very difficult being frozen out of the team because we have so many capable strikers at Newcastle".

Alan Pardew was happy to give him his first Barclays Premier League start for the club in the absence of the injured Carroll and Shola Ameobi, and it was the chance for the striker to show the Toon Army what they have been missing.

64 minutes - and a hat-trick later - he told Carroll to start looking over his shoulder as Newcastle dumped woeful West Ham deep into relegation trouble.

Best opened his account on his 15th appearance with a fine hat-trick to repay a large slice of his £1.2million transfer fee.

They were the 24-year-old's first goals in a week short of a year and came on the day it was revealed Newcastle had rejected an approach from Tottenham for Carroll.

Best's first-half brace and skipper Kevin Nolan's 45th-minute strike put the Magpies in the driving seat, and his third on the hour completed a first double of the campaign and ended the Hammers' recent revival before Peter Lovenkrands helped himself to a fifth.

It was the third time this season Newcastle had scored five or more at St James' Park, and substitute Nile Ranger passed up a glorious opportunity to match the six they managed against Aston Villa back in August.

There was an air of anxiety when it was revealed that Ameobi had joined Carroll in the treatment room.

However, manager Alan Pardew had insisted that both Best and Ranger would get chances this season and his faith in the former Coventry man proved spectacularly well-founded.

Best made his first appearance of the season as a substitute at the DW Stadium at the weekend after a miserable run of injuries had hampered his progress on Tyneside.

But he needed just 18 minutes to justify his selection when he ran on to Lovenkrands' ball over the top to thump a left-foot volley across Robert Green and into the bottom corner.

West Ham had arrived in the north east buoyed by a run of four league games without defeat, but in the relegation zone as a result of victories for Fulham and Birmingham on Tuesday.

Former Magpie Scott Parker had earlier tested Steve Harper with a swerving shot and he attempted to stamp his authority on the midfield battle as the visitors looked for a way back into the game.

However, Cheik Tiote and Joey Barton recognised the danger and started to close Parker down, and with Jonas Gutierrez and Jose Enrique teaming up to terrorise the Hammers down their right, the home side were threatening at regular intervals.

They increased their lead six minutes before the break when a quick-thinking Barton and Lovenkrands carved the sleeping visitors open from a free-kick.

Barton picked out the Dane's run into space and when he slid the ball across goal, Best was again on hand to fire home left-footed.

West Ham's woes deepened markedly on the stroke of half-time when Gutierrez once again found space down the left and sent in a low cross which James Tomkins could only stab out to Nolan two yards inside the penalty area.

Nolan was a model of composure as, with Green desperately trying to recover his ground, he sidefooted the ball firmly into the bottom corner.

Hammers boss Avram Grant sent on Valon Behrami and Victor Obinna for Radoslav Kovac and Frederic Piquionne at the break in a desperate attempt to breathe new life into his team as Mike Williamson replaced Steven Taylor for the Magpies.

But despite Parker's continuing industry they were unable to create anything of note, and Newcastle killed off any hope of a fightback with 30 minutes left when Nolan turned Enrique's pass into the unmarked Best's path and he completed his hat-trick with aplomb.

Lovenkrands added a fifth three minutes later and there was still time for Ranger to fire horribly wide with the goal at his mercy 10 minutes later with the Hammers in tatters.

Is Shola Ameobi big enough to fill Andy Carroll's boots? He looked a gift horse in the mouth just seconds after kick off, but took the headlines for scoring the goal that took Newcastle back into the top half of the table.

Ameobi, back in the side (following injury) as a replacement for the injured Carroll, pounced in the 19th minute when Ali Al Habsi blocked Joey Barton's shot and Peter Lovenkrands's follow-up hit the post.

Fabricio Coloccini and Steven Taylor also both struck the woodwork for the visitors, while Gary Caldwell saw his header come back off the bar for the Latics.

It was always going to be a rough-and-tumble affair, with both sides trying to seize the opportunity to get away from the relegation scrap at the basement of the table, but Newcastle won a game they always seemed to have the edge.

When class mattered, the Toon had Barton in fabulous form probing the Wigan defence for 90 minutes, and Coloccini the ice-man in the defence.

Alan Pardew was hoping to bounce back from two straight defeats and his decision (like Chris Hughton earlier in the season) to scrap the 4-5-1 system for 4-4-2 won the day.

Newcastle created the first goalscoring opportunity after just two minutes as Danny Simpson swung a cross into the box from the right.

Ameobi was allowed the space to meet it but the striker was unable to find the target, heading the ball back across the face of goal.

Three minutes later Wigan went close themselves as a failed clearance from Ben Watson's free-kick fell to Tom Cleverley, whose curling shot drew a smart save out of Steve Harper. Antolin Alcaraz headed the resulting corner straight at the Magpies goalkeeper.

Cleverley was presented with another chance on the quarter-hour mark after receiving a neat pass from Mohamed Diame, but the on-loan Manchester United youngster volleyed over the bar.

It was encouraging stuff from the hosts, but within moments, they were behind after a defensive error by Steven Gohouri.

Having dispossessed the Ivorian, Barton struck an effort which Al Habsi managed to parry, but Lovenkrands hit the loose ball against a post and Ameobi was on hand to tuck away the rebound.

An unmarked Lovenkrands should have doubled his side's advantage in the 31st minute after Barton squared to him right in front of goal, but the Dane got the ball stuck under his feet and Watson rushed in to avert the danger.

At the other end Cleverley's deflected shot from the edge of the box earned Wigan a corner which was met by Caldwell. The Latics skipper saw his header bounce back off the bar and the ball came to Hugo Rodallega, who lifted his attempt over.

Newcastle were next to hit the woodwork soon after as Coloccini looped a header onto the top of the goalframe and then Al Habsi had to be alert in rushing out to halt Jonas Gutierrez's progress.

Lovenkrands nodded a good chance over from a cross by Barton, and the former Manchester City man sent a free-kick off-target just before the break.

Martinez substituted Hendry Thomas for James McArthur at half-time and Wigan made the early running after the re-start, Jordi Gomez advancing down the right side but sending his delivery into Harper's arms.

Rodallega tried his luck twice in quick succession only to shoot wide of the mark each time.

Mauro Boselli was then introduced in place of Gomez to give Rodallega fresh support in attack, but it was Newcastle who nearly scored 10 minutes later as yet another header hit the crossbar.

This time it was Taylor denied after he got on the end of Barton's free-kick.

Lovenkrands and Ameobi came off for Wayne Routledge and Leon Best as the visitors looked to close out the game.

Boselli claimed his shot had been blocked by Taylor's hand in the box, but referee Howard Webb waved play on.

The Yorkshire official, who had been made an MBE in the Queen's New Years Honours List, then booked Barton for a rash challenge on McArthur.

Newcastle might have added a second goal towards the end as first Best poked wide after finding himself through one-on-one and then Jose Enrique blasted over, but come the final whistle, they had done enough.
