Just three days after Matz Sels’ mistake helped gift Hull City an equaliser at Hull - and the Belgian was hardly convincing during the shoot-out defeat either - another United goalkeeper showed how impressive he can be when facing penalties.
Magpies supporters will understandably think ‘what if?’ as far as what might have happened if Karl Darlow had played against Hull in midweek is concerned, but the reality is we will never know.
Instead, fans can be content in the knowledge they have an in-form goalkeeper in possession of the gloves right now, with a highly-rated one soon to return.
Rafa Benitez appeared unsure about Darlow over the summer. But surely the Spaniard must be convinced now.
Rafa's decision to play the player he brought to the club (Sels) in the League Cup had many fans shocked, mainly because the manager rested players against Blackburn to save them for Tuesday night.
We expected the strongest team on Tuesday - but playing Sels in NOT the strongest team.
We could have been playing Manchester United in the semi-final. Instead all we have is the knowledge that Rafa got it badly wrong!
