The Player Who Proved Us Wrong

Jon Dahl signed for the Magpies back in 1997 from Dutch club SC Heerenveen for £2.2m having topped the Dutch goalscoring league in 1996/97.

He was highly rated and scored twice in a pre-season friendly in Ireland when he first signed and looked a great buy.

But he never adapted to the Premiership and struggled straight away. Probably because Alan Shearer suffered that serious injury at Goodison Park (playing against Chelsea in a pre-season fixture) and was out for half season, and Tomasson was asked to play as target man.

He was like a fish out of water. Paper-weight, and he was battered from pillar to post by Premiership defenders.

He made 34 appearances, but only scored 4 goals and was sold to Feyenoord after just one season.

But his career really took off when he left, winning just about every honour in the game, including a winner's European Championship medal with Denmark.

Today he is expected to move from Stuttgart to Spanish club Villarreal.
