Chelsea went ahead in the second minute through young left-back Patrick Van Aanholt only for United to storm back and lead at the interval thanks to goals from Nile Ranger and Ryan Taylor.

Ameobi made it 3-1 to United four minutes after the restart but two goals from Nicolas Anelka (69, 86) looked to have taken the tie into extra-time.

However, Ameobi headed the winner from a Jonas Gutierrez corner in the 90th minute to earn special praise from Hughton.

Chris Hughton: "Shola showed why he is still at this football club.

"He has had periods at the club where injuries have hindered his progress. That was the case last season. But on this form he is top player."

However, I think we ALL know why Shola is still at the club - Stoke City sent him back after turning down the option to buy him after a poor loan spell at the club when he joined them in March 2008.

He made six appearances for Stoke and didn't find the back of the net, as the described him as "the final piece of their promotion jigsaw".

They DID get promoted, but Shola didn't play much of a role in it.

The problem with Shola is inconsistency, and Sir Bobby Robson summed it up when he described him: "He has such a rare talent.

"I watch him at times and he can do things no-one else at this club can do, and I include the likes of Alan Shearer, Hugo Viana and Laurent Robert in that.

"But you watch him beat three or four players with ease, ghost past them, then he's liable to tread on the ball and fall over.

"He's the sort of player you never know what to expect. You don't know which side of his play you are going to get, and as a manager he can frustrate you."
