The Day The Spartan Army Invaded St James'

Many of our older readers know all about the Spartans. United went out of the 1978 FA Cup to Wrexham after a 2-2 draw at St James' Park in front of a crowd of 29,344. Blyth met the Welsh side in the quarter-finals and the game was also played at St James, but this time the crowd was an amazing 42,157 ... with 8,000 locked outside!

But it would be jumping the gun thinking United had a "lamby" against the Terriers in their semi. United have played them in the last six years, and the Terriers have won three of the last four!
