Benitez’s main selection dilemma tomorrow relates to Salomon Rondon, and whether to start the Venezuelan striker ahead of Yoshinori Muto or Joselu.

Muto started last weekend’s game with Southampton, but was replaced in the second half as Newcastle failed to record a single effort on target.

“You can be training and be fit, but when you play, it’s a different thing,” said Benitez. “It's so intense. How can you improve the match fitness? Playing games.

“If you're asking me, 'Is he (Rondon) better than last week?’. I hope so. Is he ready to play 90 minutes? Maybe. Maybe not. The match fitness has to improve playing games. But if you do not play him, he will not improve his match fitness. It’s quite difficult to find the balance.”

NEWCASTLE

Newcastle defender Ciaran Clark will miss out. The Republic of Ireland international, who had earlier recovered from a thigh injury, was laid low by a bug earlier this week and although he has returned to training, he is not in the squad. Fellow defender Florian Lejeune (cruciate ligament) remains the only senior casualty.

WATFORD

England midfielder Nathaniel Chalobah is set to return to the Watford squad from a minor knee problem. Forward Troy Deeney (hamstring) remains a doubt while defenders Sebastian Prodl (leg) and Daryl Janmaat (knee) are also still sidelined, along with midfielder Tom Cleverley (Achilles).
