Taylor To Be Offered New Deal

Taylor has already turned down one new five-year deal because United were well away from the player's valuation.

But chairman Chris Mort will see Taylor's dad Alf, who is looking after his son's affairs, because, unlike most players in the Premier League, the defender chooses not to have an agent.

But Taylor's current deal does not run out until June 2009, so there is no rush ... and Tottenham are in no situation to offer the player anything.

The transfer market is closed; no deal with Spurs can be struck until January; by which time manager Martin Joll will be on the dole.

Taylor told The Chronicle: "I had a lump in my throat when Stuart Pearce handed me the captain's armband, and I look on this is a massive honour, not just for myself, but for everyone connected with Newcastle United football club."

The England Under-21 squad flew to Sofia today for Tuesday's second European Championship Group Three match with Bulgaria but he will be back on Tyneside the following day to begin his preparations for the game with Derby County at Pride Park a week on Monday.
