Newcastle young defender was sent-off, but super-sub Theo Walcott came off the bench to sink 10-man Germany Under-21s 2-0 and book England's place in next year's European Championships.

England headed to Germany with a slender 1-0 advantage from the first leg of the qualifying play-off at Coventry's Ricoh Arena on Friday night.

The Germans were reduced to 10 men on 12 minutes, when Markus Brzenska saw red for hauling down David Nugent after he had burst clear on goal.

Referee Jaroslav Jara awarded Germany a dubious penalty and booked Steven Taylor for a foul on Mario Gomez in the 18-yard box. Gonzalo Castro stepped up and planted his spot-kick wide, and Scott Carson saved Gomez's header before the break to keep the score level.

After the interval, Taylor received a second yellow card for a foul on Gomez. But Taylor's dismissal bizarrely galvanised the visitors, and Walcott's introduction transformed the game.

The Arsenal youngster converted two clinical efforts on 84 and 90 minutes to book England a trip to Holland next summer.
