Both were forced off against Arsenal by injuries, and Chris Hughton's side never recovered from their losses.

Hughton will discover today the extent of Taylor and Bassong's respective ankle and groin problems, with both players - who yesterday had pain-killing injections at the club's training ground - having the injuries scanned at a Newcastle hospital.

Taylor fears his damaged ankle ligaments will keep him out for at least three weeks, while Bassong is not optimistic he will be recover in time for Chelsea.
