Supermouth: "Newcastle Surprised Us"

He loves nothing more than hearing himself talk. And if you believed him last week, it would be Alkmaar going into tonight's UEFA Cup tie leading 4-2 ... NOT Newcastle!

What his side were going to do to the Magpies is nobody's business. He showed no respect to either the club nor the manager, and I don't think Glenn Roeder did anything in the way of motivating his players prior to the game, because his players couldn't wait to get at them!

And, surprising though it may seem, AZ Alkmaar coach Louis van Gaal didn't see it coming.

The Dutchmen found themselves 4-1 down by half-time at St James' Park, and although they managed to pull back another goal before the final whistle, they head into Thursday night's second leg knowing they face an uphill battle to reach the quarter-finals.

Van Gaal: "I expect Newcastle to play as well as they did last week - but I also expect us to play much better than we did at Newcastle. At St James' Park, maybe only three of my players reached the levels of which they are capable.

"I expect them all to be at their best tomorrow, and we will see what happens.

"Obafemi Martins and Kieron Dyer are two of the most dangerous strikers in England when they play like they did at St James' Park. I have to say, it was fascinating stuff.

"Newcastle's quality in turning chances into goals really caught us out - it was bang, smash and grab stuff.

"We expected Newcastle to try to match us for football in the first leg, but they did not and I have to admit we were surprised at how direct they were."
