Steve Bruce Confirms Jacob Murphy Will Stay at Newcastle United

Jacob Murphy is set to remain at Newcastle United for the 2020/21 season, according to manager Steve Bruce.

Murphy's days at St James' Park appeared to be numbered, having spent the last 18 months out on loan in the Championship.

However, his outstanding performance in their 7-0 Carabao Cup victory over Morecambe appears to have reignited his chances of featuring for the Magpies in the long-term.

Bruce was full of praise for the 25-year-old, who found the net with a fine curling effort and assisted Miguel Almiron during the drubbing.

Speaking after the game, Bruce said (via Yorkshire Post): "I won’t be letting him [Murphy] out on loan - not after a performance like that. He deserves to stay with us.

"He’s improved enormously. I’ve been very, very pleased, even thought he hasn’t made the squad for the weekend. We’ve got 20-odd players to choose from. But, at this particular moment, I won’t be letting Jacob go out."

The winger, who is the twin brother of Cardiff City's Josh Murphy, signed for Newcastle in 2017 for a reported £12m. He made 41 appearances for the Magpies, scoring once, before being loaned out to West Bromwich Albion in January 2019. He was then loaned to Sheffield Wednesday for the 2019/20 season, scoring nine times in 44 outings.

The Owls had hoped to secure Murphy's services for another year, but Bruce's comments appear to have put an end to any speculation linking him with a move away.

"He’s had a really good pre-season," Bruce added. "He showed a great attitude towards it. I think you’ve also witnessed he’s benefitted obviously from being out on loan.

"He’s a good young player who’s direct and quick and he’s grasped his chance. Arguably, he’s our best player tonight. Fair play to him."
