"When Newcastle went to sign James Milner from Leeds they offered me as part of the deal. Once that happened, I felt I had to go," the Welsh international said.
"It was still a big decision and I could have stayed for my final year but my time was up - I have no complaints.
"They were up front and told me I was not going to get another contract. That is business I suppose."
