South American adventure nearing end?

While Nobby was a Kenny Dalglish signing, at various times during his spell in charge Sir Bobby has signed Fumaca, Diego Gavilan, Cristian Bassedas Clarence Acuna, Daniel Cordone and Pablo Bonvin.

Most of the South American signings have already departed, leaving just the transfer-listed Acuna and Nobby at the club (Gavilan is still contracted to the club for another season but is out on loan at Internacional in Brazil).

The hard-working Acuna seems certain to leave in the summer with clubs in Mexico and Portugal reported to be interested, while Sir Bobby is prepared to listen to offers for Nobby.

The Peruvian has certainly been a success at St James’ Park, competing with George Robledo and Phillip Albert for the title of the club’s best ever foreign player, but the rest of the South American contingent endured an unhappy time at St James’ Park.

The experiment of buying players from South America has proved to be an almost total flop. Several of the players arrived on Tyneside with impressive international reputations but whether it be because of the different culture, the type of football played in the Premiership or the club versus country rows they failed to shine in a black and white shirt.

So while many will be disappointed if Nobby does leave few will be upset if the club begins the season without a single South American in the squad.
