Souness Side-Kick Joins Toshack

We all know what happened to Souness; Mac is still at St James' Park but it is thought Big Sam is still wondering what exactly McDermott actually DOES at the club; and now we can confirm the future of the other one.

Dean Saunders has been appointed as Wales manager John Toshack's assistant.

The Newcastle coach, who won 75 caps for his country, replaces Salvador Iriarte, who has taken over as Real Sociedad's new technical director in the wake of their relegation from La Liga.

Swansea-born Saunders, 43, was one of the unsuccessful candidates for the Wales job when Toshack was appointed in November 2004, and would now become a serious contender for the job when Toshack's reign ends.

He is probably best known on Tyneside for being quoted as saying he had found a few faults in Alan Shearer's finishing, and was going to give him some advice.

Yep ... I'm sure the 'Curly One' made Shearer the player he finally became.

Although, then again ....
