Michael Owen's injury setback prompted Souness to switch his first team squad's training to the academy pitches in the latest attempt to solve an injury crisis.
Souness admitted: "I don't know how good this team is because they have not played together. We signed some really top-class players in the summer months but I have not been able to get them on the pitch.
"No manager is ever entirely happy but I am a lot happier now than the day I walked through the door for the first time. I believe we have got a very good group of players in terms of people who stand up when things go wrong. We have got real quality in lots of positions.
"Moving the training was the last resort, we talked to some extremely qualified people and decided it was down to the pitches so we have moved up to the academy where the pitches are soil-based and not as firm."
