Sorry Leeds - We've Got Your Boys!

Just a couple of weeks ago we reported on this site the sad plight of the once great Leeds.

In no way was it a dig at the club or the fabulous fans; simply a show of sympathy because WE (Newcastle United) were so close to that rocky road to hell back in 1992.

We had to beat Leicester City at Filbert Street to stay in the old Second Division, just 90 minutes from the drop into the league where Leeds find themselves at the moment. We won 2-1, thanks to an own goal in injury time, but results elsewhere sent Plymouth Argyle down ... not ourselves. By the way ... Leeds were league champions that year, of what is now the Premiership.

We were promoted the following season, vowing never to be in that position again. But as we have seen with Leeds ... it CAN happen. And they thought they had seen it all, knew they were in the gutter but at long last realised there was only one way to go ... up!

Well how wrong they were. The misery just gets worse!

Leeds now face a battle to persuade fellow Football League clubs they do not deserve to start the season with a 15-point penalty.

The club have been granted their Football League share - enabling them to start the League One campaign - but incurred a penalty for not complying with the authorities' rules on insolvency.

Leeds immediately appealed against the punishment and their case will now be heard at a special meeting of all league clubs, to be arranged in due course.

As we said in our article, Leeds and Toon fans have not always seen eye to eye. I spent a night in a police cell one evening back in the 1970s for a little argument with the Geldard End. Outnumbered by about 10,000-to-1, a copper did the wise thing and dragged me out. And I had a couple of incidents after that particular day that we won't go into.

But hand on heart ... I respect no other supporters the way I respect Leeds. And my heart goes out to them.

KEEP THE FAITH!

Yours in football.
