The Spaniard is currently leading the Magpies’ promotional charge on the back of five consecutive league wins, after back-to-back defeats earlier on in the campaign.

The 56-year-old, who masterminded Liverpool’s Champions League triumph in 2005 and FA Cup success a year later, hopes to achieve similar success with his current club.

“I have said before Geordies and Scoucers are very similar,” Benitez told the Chronicle. “I was really pleased there [Liverpool] and I’m really pleased here.

“Hopefully I can stay here for as many years here as I was there. Winning something here – that would be perfect for everyone.”

Benitez spent six seasons at Anfield helping the club to win their fifth European cup in his first season in charge, after the Reds mounted a famous comeback from 3-0 down to beat AC Milan on penalties in Istanbul.

Newcastle last lifted a major trophy in 1955 when they beat Manchester City in the FA Cup final, but they have never tasted European glory.

The former Real Madrid boss currently has the task of guiding his side back to the top-flight of English football, with the Toon Army currently sitting in second place with 15 points.

The north east club recorded a 6-0 victory in their previous Championship encounter and now host Wolves on Saturday afternoon at St James’ Park.
