Sir Bobby satisfied with a point

Sir Bobby

"It's a valuable point - I'm relatively pleased. As much as I've settled for the result, I wish we could have given the customers a goal at either end - a bit of Christmas cheer.

"We had a great start, with Laurent Robert having a shot cleared off the line, but Charlton came back into it and gave as good as they got overall.

"Perhaps if Laurent's shot had gone in, it would perhaps have given us impetus to go on and win it.

"But the game got very bitty and the two defences were on top in the main, with Jon Fortune doing very well on Alan Shearer.

"And Shay Given has had to make some good saves and overall had a fine match, so we can't complain.

"He's got great agility, a good pair of hands and the courage to go with it. He's an outstanding goalkeeper.

"Nobby was one of our better players - he was outstanding in fact.

"I took a chance with him but I thought he could handle the situation because the man up against him, Graham Stuart, is no Ryan Giggs.

"As long as Nobby got him onto his right foot and stopped him from getting balls into the box, I knew he'd be okay - and he was.

"The most important thing today was that we didn't let Charlton steal a march on us in fourth place in the table."

Alan Curbishley

"I'll have to see a tape of the match before I give a proper opinion, but my first impression is that we did make some great chances and I'm disappointed not to finish with the win.

"But it wasn't a boring 0-0 match. We needed to score but Shay made some great saves, although perhaps there were a few bad misses from us.

"We got into some cracking positions but over-complicated things in the final third. But it's good that we've held a side as good as Newcastle to a draw.

"We've got to start getting some points here at The Valley, but if we can carry on picking them up away from home we can stay in the top half of the table."
