Signing For Newcastle A 'Wind Up'?

Sheedy admits that he thought the chance to sign for the Magpies in 1992 was a wind-up!

Sheedy says in his new book: “In February 1992, I was away on international duty with Ireland at the Dublin Airport hotel, waiting to leave for a game against Wales, when there was a phone call for me.

The voice said it was Terry McDermott, who was then at Newcastle.

“Although Terry has a distinctive lisp I still thought it was one of the Ireland lads, like Andy Townsend or Tony Cascarino, winding me up. It was the sort of thing they’d do.

“But I soon realised it was Terry on the line. I’d known him from the time we were together at Liverpool.

“‘Would you be interested in coming to Newcastle?’ Terry asked me. Of course I would.

“When I arrived, Newcastle were in danger of being relegated to the old Division Three.

“Brian Kilcline had also been signed and we made our debuts together in a 1-1 home draw with Barnsley.

“I played in all but one of the remaining games, and scored to get us a crucial point in a 1-1 draw at Grimsby Town.

“We stayed up by winning our last game of the season, 2-1 at Leicester City, to finish 20th in the 24-club league.

“That was a huge relief for the club and provided the momentum for a superb start to the 1992/93 season.”
