Shola For Southampton?

According to the Sunday Sun, Southampton have made a bold bid to land Newcastle striker Shola Ameobi on loan. Apparently Saints boss Harry Redknapp is desperate to add firepower to his squad before the Championship season resumes next weekend and Shola is a target.
With only Michael Owen, Alan Shearer and Shola Ameobi regarded as first team strikers, and Michael Chopra struggling with injuries, it would be unthinkable for Graeme Souness to even think about the offer.

The newspaper claims United had an initial approach for Ameobi knocked back last week, and Redknapp will try again in the next few days.
Meanwhile, a top Fenerbahce official last night insisted Newcastle will be wasting their time if they make a renewed bid for striker Nicolas Anelka in January. Souness is still keen on a striker he attempted to sign in the summer, but Fenerbahce's vice-president Nihat Ozdemir told the Sunday Sun: "Anelka is happy at Fenerbahce. Our fans love him and we want to be successful in the Champions League.
"So it is not possible we would sell him to Newcastle."
