Shelvey And Cardiff - The Facts

Newcastle take on Cardiff this weekend at St James' Park as they look to enter the international break in the perfect way.

Three more points would also see them consolidate their position at the top of the table, with the Magpies already leading second placed Brighton by three points.

Throughout the team, there is so much attacking talent with the likes of Dwight Gayle and Aleksandar Mitrovic battling for the starting berth up front for their side. While defensively they have been very sound with Jamaal Lascelles marshalling his team superbly.

Deeper in the team is the man that seems to start off every single promising move; Jonjo Shelvey.

The former Liverpool midfielder has been in astonishing form this season with his performances form midfield driving his team forward. His passing range, deft touches and intelligent runs have given the opposition all kinds of problems this season with the midfielder of a standard above the Championship.

While Shelvey will of course want to beat Cardiff simply to continue his sides incredible form, there could be an underlying reason as to why he will want to beat the Welsh side and that is because he is a former Swan.

Shelvey played for Swansea City between 2013-2016, making 79 appearances for the Welsh side, scoring 10 goals. For those in Newcastle that are not aware of the rivalry between the two clubs, it is fair to say that Swansea vs Cardiff is the Newcastle vs Sunderland of Wales.

Especially when the two were in the Premier League together, the rivalry between them was ramped up to a whole new level. Shelvey was not used in the Swans' 3-0 win at home, however, he was part of the side that lost 1-0 to Cardiff in November 2013.

It is likely the Englishman would not have been aware of the huge Welsh rivalry and the vociferous atmosphere he and his teammates were met with. It ultimately ended in Cardiff being relegated to the Championship that season, however, Shelvey will be out for revenge after a game that he was so ineffective in as he did not get the chance to rectify his poor performance in the return fixture.

He will be desperate to put in another strong performance then, with Newcastle looking to consolidate their place at the top of the league, with an improvement on the midfielder's last game against Cardiff vital.
